We Will Overcome” – A Soulful Anthem of Truth, Healing and Resistance

British-Filipino band Ooberfuse have long been known for fusing catchy electronic pop with deep social commentary, but their latest single “We Will Overcome” is more than just a song—it’s a bold humanitarian statement wrapped in raw emotion and stirring melodies. This release not only marks a powerful musical milestone but also signals a growing urgency in global human rights advocacy.

Billed as one of the hottest acts… Ooberfuse is one not to be missed. Loved everywhere from DJ magazine to BBC Introducing. They’ve made a record ft Snoop Dogg about homelessness and even the Pope is a fan.Greenbelt Festival, UK

Released on 14 March 2025, “We Will Overcome” is inspired by the real-life suffering of trafficked and abused children in the Philippines—specifically in Olongapo, where Ooberfuse have been collaborating with the PREDA Foundation, a non-profit led by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Father Shay Cullen. With USAID funding abruptly cut during the Trump administration, vital programs that rescued and rehabilitated these children were left in crisis. In this bleak reality, Ooberfuse use their platform to shine a spotlight on the silence and suffering that often goes unheard.

From the opening chords, the track draws listeners into a world where music is not just sound—it’s a cry for justice. Cherrie Anderson’s delicate yet powerful vocals deliver the chorus “we will overcome by speaking truth to power” with heartfelt clarity. You feel the conviction behind every word. It’s no surprise that Anderson, who grew up in the Philippines, speaks so intimately about the cultural silence that surrounds child abuse in her home country. “Music is a powerful means to end the silence,” she says, and in this song, her voice becomes that light breaking through the darkness.

Musically, “We Will Overcome” finds a beautiful balance between sorrow and hope. Hal St John’s production lends the track a modern but sensitive edge, using lush electronic textures that lift the voices of real children—survivors from PREDA—who sing along with passion and bravery. Their voices, raw and unfiltered, are arguably the soul of the track. As Hal puts it, “My heart was quite literally bursting with joy when we first heard the children singing at the top of their lungs.” This joy, rooted in pain but transformed into resilience, radiates from every beat of the song.

The lyrics don’t shy away from harsh truths, nor do they sugarcoat the atrocities happening in the shadows of reopened US military bases in the Philippines. With rising geopolitical tensions in the region, the song also becomes a timely reminder of how foreign policy can ripple into the lives of the most vulnerable. As Father Shay Cullen warns, the reestablishment of these bases has historically fueled the sex trade involving Filipina women and children. “The trade war with China and the cutting of USAID is the perfect storm,” he says—a warning underscored by every note in this haunting anthem.

In a world where pop music often skirts around real issues, “We Will Overcome” is a brave outlier. It refuses to be background noise. It commands attention—not just to be heard, but to be acted upon. It’s both a tribute to the incredible healing work of PREDA and a call to arms for new supporters, students, activists, and citizens of conscience.

The timing of the release, ahead of the International Day for the Right to the Truth on March 24, is no accident. Ooberfuse are not simply artists—they are advocates. This song stands as both a musical achievement and a moral reckoning, encouraging listeners to face uncomfortable truths and get involved.

“We Will Overcome” is more than a single—it’s a sonic movement of solidarity. Ooberfuse have once again proven that music can be a lifeline, a protest, and a beacon of hope all at once. Their fearless storytelling and humanitarian commitment make this one of the most important releases of the year.
