Aco Takenaka – Ancient Seeds

Tokyo-based singer-songwriter Aco Takenaka returns with her long-awaited third album Ancient Seeds, a transcendent work that blurs the boundaries between the ancient and the contemporary. In collaboration with celebrated Japanese composer Toshiyuki O’mori, Takenaka creates a sonic landscape that is both deeply spiritual and strikingly modern—a heartfelt attempt to preserve and reawaken the power of songs that have been passed down through generations, now endangered by the pace of modern life.

At its core, Ancient Seeds is a project rooted in revival and remembrance. Drawing inspiration from the traditional chants and mantras of Japan, Tibet, India, Africa, and North America, the album reinterprets ancient forms without losing their essence. Each song carries the pulse of ancestral memory, yet feels accessible in a modern context thanks to O’mori’s lush arrangements and Takenaka’s mesmerizing vocals. It’s an album that doesn’t just sound beautiful—it feels sacred.

Aco Takenaka’s voice has long been her greatest instrument. Often described as a “seven-colored shamanic voice,” her tone shifts effortlessly between tenderness and power, blending languages and traditions in a way that transcends cultural boundaries. Singing in Japanese, English, and even ancient dialects, Takenaka guides listeners through a spiritual journey that reconnects sound, nature, and the human soul. The result is an album that feels timeless, as though it exists both in the present and in some ageless past.

Musically, Ancient Seeds is stunningly detailed. O’mori’s orchestral sensibility—honed through his work in anime and film—gives each track a cinematic richness. Strings, harps, and delicate percussion form a soundscape that breathes and expands with each chant. The inclusion of world-class collaborators such as Joss Jaffe, Tamao Fuji, Ko Ishikawa, Hiroki Okano, and Masashi Yamaguchi adds depth and authenticity, bridging global traditions with modern production. From the drone of the sho (a traditional Japanese mouth organ) to the haunting tones of the Native American flute, every sound feels intentional, reverent, and alive.

Thematically, the album is about healing—both personal and collective. It reminds us of the ancient role of music as a therapeutic force. Spanish radio host Jordi Garcia called Ancient Seeds “an almost mystical work,” praising Takenaka’s ability to connect listeners with the ancestral function of music as spiritual medicine. That observation captures the essence of this project perfectly. Each track unfolds like a ritual, a gentle invocation to remember who we are and where we come from.

While Takenaka’s earlier works—Moon Chant and Dear My Land—explored her connection to nature and identity, Ancient Seeds feels like her most mature and visionary effort yet. The production is grand but not overwhelming, the message profound yet intimate. It’s a continuation of her lifelong artistic mission: to bridge sound and soul across cultures.

In a time when digital noise often drowns out quiet truth, Ancient Seeds stands as a rare, luminous offering. It is music meant for reflection, for healing, and for remembering. Takenaka has not only revived ancient songs—she’s given them new life, allowing them to bloom once more in the modern world.
