French synth-pop producer Lewis OfMan is back on the scene since his collaboration with Carly Rae Jepsen on last year’s hit “Move Me.” This time, he joins forces with the talented Empress Of for his latest single, “Highway.” Accompanying the release is a mesmerizing music video shot in Los Angeles and directed by Lewis’ visual collaborator, Ecoute Chérie. Lewis shares his thoughts on “Highway”:
“Highway” is like a refreshing shower, reminiscent of getting ready to venture out on a sunny day. It represents a fresh start for me as I delve into a new musical style. The track took shape during a reset break from love and the constant touring in Greece—a moment to reconnect with myself. I drew inspiration from 70s Brazilian music, artists like Jorge Ben and Quarteto Em Cy, and also revisited the psychedelic rock I enjoyed during my teenage years, which is why you can hear that fuzzy phaser guitar sound. I even played the drums on the track, my first instrument, so it’s a blend of newness and a return to my musical roots. Serendipitously, I met Empress Of in Los Angeles, and on the morning of our studio session, while walking to retrieve my forgotten wallet, I listened to this demo and thought, ‘This would be the perfect song to collaborate on with her.’ The vibes flowed effortlessly, and we wrote and recorded her vocals in just a few hours. I was genuinely impressed by her incredible talent and tone—one of the most gifted singers I’ve ever encountered.
Empress Of adds her perspective: “Lewis is an artistic whirlwind, and this song is absolutely fantastic. He had such a clear vision for the track and played me many beautiful Brazilian references in the studio. Watching him work is like witnessing lightning—darting from one synth to another, sporting sunglasses indoors. A true Renaissance man.”
Lewis further reveals, “The music evoked vivid visions of those extraordinary moments you experience while on the road or living a solitary life. Those lovers you encounter along the way, dreams and adventures you embark upon—’Highway’ encapsulates this journey. Interestingly, at its culmination, you may just discover the love you’ve always sought within yourself, despite searching for it in others.”
