Philadelphia-based indie pop band MOONROOF has once again captivated listeners with their latest single, “Buzz.” Known for their infectious melodies and emotionally resonant lyrics, the band takes a fresh direction with this track, exploring the theme of phone addiction—a modern love affair that millions can relate to.
MOONROOF has built their reputation on crafting songs centered around love and relationships, but “Buzz” marks a distinct departure from their usual themes. “This is our new song ‘Buzz,’” the band explains. “Usually, we like to write songs about love and relationships, but for this one, we wanted to change things up a bit. We wanted to make a song in a similar love style, but with the ‘love interest’ being your phone, or more specifically, the ‘buzz’ of notifications. It’s pretty much the operant conditioning our phones have brought to modern society.”
“Buzz” is both warm and catchy, skillfully blending the band’s signature indie pop sound with a reflective commentary on the digital age. The lyrics read like a love song, but upon closer inspection, reveal a deeper message about our obsession with screens, social media, and the constant need for validation through notifications.
MOONROOF is composed of four talented musicians who first crossed paths at Bloomsburg University before relocating to the Philadelphia area. The lineup includes Dave Kim on vocals, Kevin Randolph on bass, Johnny Fordyce on guitar, and Dan Rendine on drums. Their chemistry is palpable, with each member bringing their own unique energy and skill to the band’s sound.
Their music is heavily influenced by artists like The 1975, The Band Camino, Two Door Cinema Club, Wallows, and Vampire Weekend, resulting in a sound that’s both contemporary and nostalgic, seamlessly blending upbeat rhythms with introspective lyrics.
Since forming, MOONROOF has become a prominent fixture in the indie music scene, performing at some of the most notable venues and festivals in the Northeast. They’ve graced the stage at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion for the Alt 104.5 12th Birthday Show, Underground Arts for their EP ‘TOMOS’ release show, and several other iconic venues like The Foundry and Mercury Lounge.
Their festival appearances include MusikFest, 2nd Street Fest, and the Haverford Music Festival, among others. They’ve also had their music featured on radio stations like Alt 104.5 and WXPN, and have made TV appearances on ABC News Philly and Lehigh Valley News.
“Buzz” was recorded at Little Brother Audio, a studio run by Tyler Ripley and Victor Sabatino in collaboration with Free Dive Collective. The production perfectly captures the band’s intention to create a track that sounds like a love song but carries the underlying theme of phone and social media addiction.
With a smooth blend of indie pop and rock elements, “Buzz” is a sonic representation of the bittersweet relationship many of us have with our devices. As Dave Kim puts it, “We’re an indie pop/indie rock band who plays upbeat sad music about relationships and self-esteem issues.” This juxtaposition of upbeat soundscapes with introspective lyrics is what makes MOONROOF’s music so relatable and engaging.
“Buzz” is a timely and clever commentary on modern society’s dependence on technology, wrapped in the feel-good vibes that MOONROOF fans have come to love. With its catchy melody and thought-provoking lyrics, the single is sure to resonate with listeners who find themselves in a love-hate relationship with their phones. As MOONROOF continues to evolve, “Buzz” stands as a testament to their ability to stay relevant while still delivering the heartfelt music that made them a standout in the indie scene.
