Emanating from the lively rock scene of Brighton, Self Torque is the brainchild of Gabriel A. Pentin, acclaimed front person of the underground hardcore legends UnHang. Shifting away from the intense world of hardcore, Self Torque embraces a distinctly melodic and personal approach, presenting concise, sweet, and straightforward anthems infused with a blend of punk ethos and pop sensibilities.
Self Torque’s debut single, ‘No Rest,’ is a pulsating sonic declaration that captures the essence of relentless hooks, highlighting a profound understanding that catchiness is paramount. Evoking influences from early 2000s indie and early 90s punk, ‘No Rest’ serves as a genuine rallying cry for those feeling dispossessed, juxtaposing infectious energy with introspective lyrics delving into frustration and desperation.
Guided by Gabriel A. Pentin, already renowned for leading Brighton punk’s UnHang, Self Torque emerges as an exciting new venture. Reflecting on ‘No Rest,’ Gabriel explains, “No Rest originated from the frustration of struggling to write a song. The opening line, ‘When will the inspiration come, when will things start to be fun?’ is about not knowing where to begin in life, acknowledging personal limitations, yet recognizing personal growth.”
The single is part of the upcoming EP titled ‘No Rest for the Depressed,’ scheduled for a global release on December 15, 2023. The EP introduces a lively and contemplative collection of songs that seamlessly balance weight, energy, and meaning. Gabriel underscores the EP’s fast and energetic nature, ensuring a cohesive experience that resonates with a shared theme of desperation.
Speaking about the EP, Gabriel notes, “I wanted all the songs to maintain a fast and energetic pace, avoiding any slowdowns. I intentionally omitted slow songs in the middle, creating a group of songs with a specific energy. Lyrically, they share a common sense of desperation, but there’s also an undertone of positivity in those songs.”
Rooted in fast punk-rock-pop influences from acts like Against Me, Tom Petty, and Hot Snakes, Self Torque, with ‘No Rest’ and the upcoming EP, positions itself to follow in the footsteps of notable names in the rock scene.
The single ‘No Rest’ is currently available on major streaming platforms, providing audiences with a glimpse into Self Torque’s dynamic sound. As Gabriel A. Pentin continues to be a fixture in the South Coast DIY punk scene, Self Torque emerges as an invigorating project, blending indie-pop sensibility with a punk essence. Supported by Not Saints, the UK’s sole record label working with musicians in recovery from addiction, Self Torque isn’t merely creating music—it’s spearheading a purposeful and passionate sonic revolution.
