Prepare to embark on a rollercoaster of love and life as London’s indie rock sensation, The Graft, proudly unveils their long-anticipated debut album, ‘Chirpse,’ slated for release on October 6, 2023. This musical journey navigates the cyclical minefield of seeking love amid the bustling streets of London, weaving together ten heartfelt songs that portray one man’s quest for love. ‘Chirpse’ also includes a selection of their previously acclaimed singles, featuring hits like ‘Jenny,’ ‘Birkenstock,’ ‘It’s Too Late & It’s Ok,’ and ‘Don’t Mean Much.’

To support the launch of ‘Chirpse,’ The Graft has mapped out an exciting autumn tour across London. The band eagerly seeks collaborations with curators capable of promoting the album through playlists, radio broadcasts, social media campaigns, live performances, music blogs, and album reviews. They invite music enthusiasts to immerse themselves in their music and join them on an emotional and sonorous journey.

Since 2018, The Graft has solidified their presence as a prominent figure in London’s live music scene. Throughout these years, they’ve meticulously cultivated their unique blend of indie rock and punk, characterized by swagger, infectious energy, and tracks that beckon you to dance the night away. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of guitar-driven music, their roots are deeply embedded in the Britpop sound they grew up with, with influences that include iconic bands like Blur, Pulp, Libertines, and Stone Roses. However, their musical odyssey extends beyond a single era, taking cues from classic rock legends like Guns N’ Roses, Steely Dan, and Jimi Hendrix, while embracing the contemporary post-punk vibes of bands like Idles, Shame, and the Arctic Monkeys.

The Graft’s line-up comprises four accomplished members, each contributing their unique talents to the band’s distinctive sound starting with Peter Carr, the charismatic lead vocalist who takes center stage. Rob Myrvold, the lead guitarist, responsible for delivering electrifying riffs and melodies. Calvin Baena, the backbone of the band, holding the rhythm as the drummer. Sam Drake, handling the bass guitar, infusing the music with depth and groove.

The formation of The Graft is a testament to friendship and a shared love for music. The band’s origins date back to around 2003, where they first crossed paths in Camden, NW1, London. Bonding over drinks at the legendary Britpop haunts in the area, their connection solidified as they realized their mutual passion for the same music. A series of shared gigs followed, attending performances by bands such as The Libertines, Charlatans, Rifles, Happy Mondays, and Stone Roses. A few years later, they found themselves in the studio, setting the course for the band’s remarkable journey.

The Graft’s musical inspiration stems from a diverse spectrum of guitar music, transcending generations. While their roots firmly embrace the Britpop era that shaped their early years, their sonic exploration extends to classic rock greats, including the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Steely Dan, and Jimi Hendrix. In addition, they draw from the modern post-punk landscape, infusing their music with elements of bands such as Idles, Shame, and the Arctic Monkeys.

The band has achieved notable milestones, earning radio coverage in various countries, including Canada, Germany, and Mexico. Their journey in London’s live music circuit since 2018 has seen them grace the stages of iconic venues across the city. Notably, their previous EP launch featured two vibrant parties, one hosted at Camden’s legendary ‘Good Mixer’ and the other at ‘Hot Box’ in Chelmsford, further establishing their popularity and live performance prowess. To celebrate the release of ‘Chirpse,’ The Graft is gearing up for a tour that will take them across London, with aspirations to expand their footprint throughout the country.

Among their memorable experiences is a performance at the bass player’s wedding, supported by the legendary 1970s punk band, The Vibrators. The band’s lead singer, Knox, famously ended the gig by stripping down to his birthday suit – a striking moment for the 70-year-old rock icon. The Graft has received accolades and praise, with quotes such as “The incomparable Graft set the world on fire with their new single, ‘Birkenstock.'”

The album and singles were meticulously recorded at South London’s renowned 123 studio in Peckham, under the guidance of producer Rob Wilkes. This studio, previously frequented by fellow British indie rockers, Foals, played a vital role in shaping The Graft’s sound.

‘Chirpse’ stands as a musical testament to the electrifying essence of The Graft’s live performances, characterized by boundless energy, palpable power, and a touch of humor. The album mirrors the band’s most personal, urgent, and visceral release to date, offering a spirited journey through the rollercoaster of love and life.

The album’s songs eloquently narrate the protagonist’s pursuit of love in the sprawling city of London. The colloquial term ‘chirpse’ – meaning ‘flirt’ or ‘chat up’ – sets the stage for the hopeful beginning in ‘On the Chirpse/Birkenstock,’ as our lead character embarks on a quest for love amidst the pubs of Camden. The optimism continues with ‘Jenny’ as he falls head over heels for the woman of his dreams. ‘Superman’ represents the peak of love.
