Urban Hane – En variant av himlen

What I find most compelling about En variant av himlen is how inward it feels. With this album, Urban Hane isn’t trying to present answers or polished conclusions. Instead, it comes across like a series of reflections, almost like fragments of thought captured in sound. There’s a tension running through the entire record between wanting to understand the world and realizing how difficult that actually is.

The album sits in a space between electronic and organic textures, and that contrast plays a big role in its identity. Some moments feel minimal and distant, while others open up into something more melodic and emotionally direct. It never fully settles into one style, which actually works in its favor because the themes themselves are about uncertainty and contradiction.

Lyrically, the focus is on the small moments that end up meaning more than we realize at the time. There’s a recurring sense that life-changing decisions don’t always feel important when they happen, and that awareness only comes later. That idea gives the album a reflective tone that feels consistent from start to finish.

One track that stands out is “Jag är inte blind.” For me, it captures the core of the album’s message. It deals with that uncomfortable moment of clarity when you start to see the compromises you’ve made just to hold onto certain versions of yourself or others. It’s not presented dramatically, but the weight of that realization is still there. It feels like a turning point, both within the album and emotionally.

The production style also adds to the intimacy of the record. Knowing that everything was created and shaped in a personal space makes sense when you hear it. The sound isn’t overly polished or expansive. Instead, it feels contained, almost like it exists inside its own world. That gives the album a sense of privacy, like you’re listening in on something that wasn’t necessarily meant to be shared on a large scale.

There’s also a noticeable Scandinavian restraint in the way emotion is handled. Nothing is pushed too far. Even when the themes get heavy, the delivery stays controlled. That restraint actually makes the impact stronger, because it leaves space for the listener to sit with the ideas instead of being overwhelmed by them.

For me, En variant av himlen works because it doesn’t try to simplify anything. It accepts that life can be both romantic and cynical at the same time, and that people can want the same things while still hurting each other.

It’s not an easy listen, but it’s a thoughtful one.
