Chris Oledude – “TURNING TABLES”

With his new single “TURNING TABLES,” Chris Oledude reaffirms his place as an artist who understands both the power of rhythm and the responsibility of truth-telling. A funky, spirited fair-wage anthem performed as a duet between Oledude and fellow singer-songwriter Lindsey Wilson, the track is a bold introduction to the emotional, political, and spiritual heartbeat of Preacher Man – Vol. 1. If Oledude calls himself a “new” artist, it’s only because his rebirth in 2020 brought a fresh fire—a renewed drive to confront today’s social and political challenges through the music that moves people both physically and mentally.

From the first bass line, “TURNING TABLES” signals its intent. The song is lively, danceable, and full of groove, but beneath the infectious rhythm lies a message grounded in economic reality. Oledude taps into the frustrations many people feel today—wage inequality, social stagnation, and a political climate that often seems stuck in place. His music reminds us that movements require movement, and this track delivers that propulsion with confidence and purpose.
Its origins add another dimension to its meaning. The earliest lyric ideas came from psychologist, dancer, and author Dr. Lora-Ellen McKinney, whose background in social justice and activism informed the spirit of the song. Inspired by her work and her Seattle exhibition “P3: The Painting & Poetry Project,” Oledude built the musical backbone of “TURNING TABLES” during 2023. After performing it live at a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in 2024, Oledude felt compelled to craft a definitive recording—a process that took 18 months and brought together musicians from New York to Woodstock. The result is a fully realized, soul-soaked funk offering that feels both old school and unmistakably current.
The production mirrors Oledude’s deep respect for musical history. The track carries the DNA of artists like Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and Gil Scott-Heron, while still maintaining Oledude’s own vibrant identity. Recorded and mixed at Mark Dann Studio in Woodstock, with additional vocal work at Sheriff Bob Studio in New York City, the song is layered with guitars, horns, tight drums, and rich backing vocals. Lindsey Wilson’s warm, commanding presence blends effortlessly with Oledude’s voice, giving the duet an uplifting call-and-response quality that echoes protest music of past eras.
What makes “TURNING TABLES” so compelling, however, is the sincerity behind it. Oledude’s artistry is shaped by decades of activism, grief, family history, and musical mentorship. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in a household where political consciousness and creativity were intertwined, he grew up harmonizing with his brothers, shaped by everything from folk to funk. After years of civic work and personal loss—including the passing of his wife—Oledude reclaimed his artistic identity with renewed urgency. That journey is felt deeply in this track.
“TURNING TABLES” reminds listeners that music can energize, inspire, and challenge all at once. It’s not just a single—it’s a statement. And as part of Preacher Man – Vol. 1, it stands as an invitation for listeners to move, think, and take part in the ongoing push for justice.
