Eric Alexandrakis – “One More Angel”

Transforming deep grief into a vibrant celebration of life, multi-instrumentalist and two-time Grammy nominee Eric Alexandrakis presents a poignant tribute to late Mavericks frontman Raul Malo with his rendition of “One More Angel”. Connected to Malo across three decades and bound by a shared history as cancer survivors, Alexandrakis turns a moment of profound personal loss into a joyous, soaring musical homage.

Originally written by Raul Malo and Alan Miller for Malo’s 2009 solo album LUCKY ONE, the track addresses themes of mortality and enduring love. Following Malo’s passing in December 2025, Alexandrakis initially approached the cover through a melancholic lens during early recording sessions. Realizing the song called for triumph rather than sadness, he shifted the direction to capture the warmth, spirit, and inspiration that Malo brought to his craft. The resulting narrative feels deeply intimate, offering solace to anyone navigating their own journey through grief.
Musically, the recording thrives on rich layers and seamless collaboration. Alexandrakis anchors the multi-instrumental production, accompanied by violinist, violist, mandolinist, and slide guitarist E.J. Ouellette, as well as former Mavericks accordion player Michael Guerra. Supported by Leo Nobre on bass, Tanner Hughes on drums, harpist Theresa Bentley, and backing vocals from Penrian Brae, the arrangement balances organic folk textures with a buoyant, full-bodied rhythm. Mixed by Paul David Hager, the soundscape strikes a delicate balance between expansive power and clear, acoustic resonance.
What works particularly well is the song’s uplifting, celebratory energy. Rather than dwelling on shadow, the driving tempo and lush instrumentation elevate Malo’s classic melody, honoring his legacy with vibrant affection. The intricate instrumental interplay mirrors the sheer joy of making music, turning a memorial into a genuine work of comfort.
Ultimately, Eric Alexandrakis delivers a heartfelt, beautifully executed tribute with “One More Angel”. Beyond its digital release, the project extends its purpose through a limited vinyl run of 500 copies featuring a custom coloring book insert, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society in Raul Malo’s memory.
