There is something wonderfully unapologetic about a seven-piece blues rock band making a nearly seven-minute song in an era where everyone seems to be trying to make everything shorter. “Why?” by London-based JFK Blue does not rush anywhere. At 6 minutes and 49 seconds, it gives the band plenty of room to build the kind of huge, organic sound that has become increasingly rare.

Originally released at the end of 2019, “Why?” was beginning to gain momentum before the arrival of Covid brought that progress to an abrupt halt. Now, years later, JFK Blue are giving the song another life as the second single from their forthcoming second album.
The subject is timeless: love found, love lost and the regret that comes afterwards. Stef Allsebrook, who leads the band on vocals and lead guitar, describes it as a very human story, and that is exactly where the song seems to find its strength. Rather than treating heartbreak as a small personal drama, JFK Blue give it a scale that matches the emotional weight of the experience.
That scale comes from the band itself. With seven musicians playing together, “Why?” has a genuine big-band sensibility without losing its blues-rock foundation. Seared guitar work drives the song forward while Hammond organ, electric piano and synthesizers add depth underneath tenor, alto and baritone saxophones. The arrangement has enough moving parts to feel expansive without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
There is also a clear sense of musicians listening to one another. JFK Blue have spent a decade on the road, with the core lineup together since 2018, and that experience comes through in the way the instruments appear to interact rather than simply occupy their own spaces. The result feels played rather than assembled.
Their collaborative approach is central to that identity. The band writes organically, with seven musicians in a room, instruments in hand, turning observations about life and relationships into music. Recording at Bonafide Studios in Muswell Hill with producer and engineer Brian Bogdanovich gave them a setting to push that approach further, and “Why?” sounds like a band comfortable enough with its own chemistry to let the song breathe.
Most importantly, this is not polished blues rock for the sake of looking retro. There is grit, soul and a little bit of danger in the combination of guitars, Hammond and saxophones. JFK Blue understand that the blues has always been about taking something painful and making it move.
“Why?” may have started its journey in 2019, but its subject has not aged at all. Love changes, people leave, memories remain, and sometimes the only question left is the one in the title.
