Boston-based blues-rock band Mad Painter takes listeners on a journey back to the golden age of rock with their latest single, “Debt Collector.” Drawing on influences from iconic acts such as Nazareth, Deep Purple, and Alice Cooper, the track captures the raw energy and melodic charm of 1970s rock while adding the band’s signature modern twist.
“Debt Collector” is the second single from the band’s upcoming third album, Island Poetry, set for release on the Italian label Epictronic, with worldwide distribution. The album, highly anticipated by fans, promises a continuation of the band’s dedication to creating original melodic blues-rock with nostalgic undertones.
Mad Painter has long been celebrated for their ability to channel the essence of 1970s British and American rock. On “Debt Collector,” the band expertly weaves this vintage sound into a crisp, modern production. Recorded at Tom Hamilton’s studio in Peabody, MA, the track delivers an authentic retro vibe, achieved in part by the use of a “harsh” Hammond organ plugged directly into a Marshall amplifier—a technique inspired by Deep Purple’s legendary Jon Lord.
The track’s foundation is built on tight guitar riffs and organ-driven melodies, creating a robust and dynamic soundscape. Paired with tongue-in-cheek lyrics penned by poet Dmitry M. Epstein, “Debt Collector” strikes a balance between gritty storytelling and playful satire, reminiscent of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
Mad Painter, a cornerstone of the New England music scene since their formation in 2015, consists of a talented lineup: Alex Gitlin on vocals and keyboards, Alan Hendry on drums, Kenne Highland on bass, Julie Gee on backing vocals, Sharon Crumrine on backing vocals and flute, and Alan Nahabedian on guitar. Together, they create a dynamic sound that bridges vintage rock influences with modern energy.
Together, they create a sound that pays homage to their rock forebears while maintaining their unique voice. “Debt Collector” exemplifies this blend, offering a fresh yet familiar experience for fans of classic rock.
Recorded in the same studio as their previous album, Splashed, the track benefits from the band’s trusted collaboration with producer Tom Hamilton. The band’s approach to recording was methodical, with particular attention paid to achieving a sound reminiscent of the early 1970s.
Lead vocalist and keyboardist Alex Gitlin shared insight into the production:
“The production was designed to be crisp and clear, evoking the spirit of bands like Deep Purple, Nazareth, and Alice Cooper. We wanted to give listeners something that feels both timeless and alive.”
One standout element of the track is its organ-driven arrangement. The use of the Hammond organ through a Marshall amplifier provides a gritty, distorted tone that channels the intensity of classic rock legends.
The lyrics for “Debt Collector” were penned by Canadian poet and long-time Mad Painter collaborator Dmitry M. Epstein. Known for his ability to craft vivid and thought-provoking narratives, Epstein brings a poetic depth to the song, which is both captivating and reflective.
“Debt Collector” is one of six tracks on the upcoming Island Poetry album to feature Epstein’s lyrics. His storytelling enhances the band’s music, adding a layer of literary sophistication to their raw rock sound.
Mad Painter recently showcased their dynamic stage presence at the North Shore Music Alive (Bev Cam) television studio in Beverly, MA, in August 2024. The performance, including an exclusive interview, will soon be aired across various cities and uploaded to YouTube, giving fans a chance to see the band in action.
As the band looks ahead to the release of Island Poetry, they remain committed to their roots while continuing to innovate. Alex Gitlin summed up their mission:
“We’re here to make music that resonates with people, blending the best of the past with something fresh and unique.”
Hailing from Boston, MA, Mad Painter has carved out a niche with their original melodic blues-rock sound, deeply influenced by 1970s British and American rock legends. Formed in 2015, the band has built a loyal following in the New England area, thanks to their engaging live performances and exceptional studio work.
With two successful albums under their belt and a third on the way, Mad Painter continues to push boundaries while honoring the legacy of classic rock. Their latest single, “Debt Collector,” is a testament to their artistry, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come in Island Poetry.
