GENGVEJ – That’s All I Need EP Review

GENGVEJ’s latest EP, That’s All I Need, released on February 20, 2025, is an exciting blend of AI-driven experimentation and deeply personal artistic expression. Hailing from Hannover, Germany, GENGVEJ has consistently explored different musical territories, and this project sees him stepping into danceable pop with a funky disco twist—all while maintaining his signature approach to music creation.

What makes That’s All I Need particularly fascinating is the way it intertwines modern technology with human creativity. GENGVEJ is transparent about his use of AI in the production process, shaping melodies, lyrics, and structures before refining them through his own artistic sensibilities. This EP is a testament to his willingness to embrace the tools of the future while still grounding his music in emotion, experimentation, and storytelling.

GENGVEJ’s musical influences are vast and eclectic. He believes that any artist who pours everything into their work deserves to be heard, and his creative process reflects this open-mindedness. He draws from a lifetime of listening across genres, attending concerts, and absorbing the essence of different musical styles.

The inspiration for That’s All I Need came from a deeply personal place—his daughter, Lissy. Her love for danceable pop music pushed him to explore a new sonic direction. Originally focused on electronic and rock projects, GENGVEJ shifted gears, crafting an EP that would resonate with her tastes while still carrying his experimental edge.

One of the standout moments in the creation of the EP came when he heard an old disco song on the radio. This sparked the idea to create a funky, 1970s-inspired disco rendition of one of his tracks. The result is a dynamic, genre-blending experience that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.

While details about individual track titles remain under wraps, it’s clear that That’s All I Need is built on contrast and reinvention. The EP’s first track was originally completed with a polished, AI-assisted production, but upon encountering that disco classic, GENGVEJ felt compelled to create an alternate version. This second track transforms the original into a groove-heavy, retro-infused dance anthem, proving his willingness to rethink and reshape his own work in pursuit of something new.

Lyrically, the EP reflects his meticulous approach to songwriting. He spent weeks refining the text, going through multiple iterations until he was satisfied. Even then, he sought feedback from an EDM producer friend in Los Angeles, who suggested additional tweaks—leading GENGVEJ to rethink his entire creative process while maintaining the essence of his original melodies.

The production itself is a mix of DIY ethic and digital sophistication. Recorded at home, GENGVEJ used AI to generate foundational elements before adding his own samples, cutting, mastering, and fine-tuning every aspect. The end result is a polished, immersive experience that still retains a raw, experimental energy.

One of the most intriguing aspects of GENGVEJ’s work is his openness about using AI as a tool in his creative process. Unlike many artists who keep such methods behind the scenes, he has chosen to be transparent—despite facing criticism. As he recalls, someone once warned him that admitting to working with AI was akin to a marathon runner shooting himself in the foot. But rather than hiding his approach, GENGVEJ continues to push forward, determined to show what’s possible when human creativity and technology intersect.

His production method is unique, particularly within his “Girls for Everything” project, a pop-oriented musical endeavor he started in mid-2024. While many artists rely solely on traditional songwriting methods, GENGVEJ blends AI-driven prompts with his own instrumental and structural decisions, challenging conventional notions of music creation. This bold approach not only expands the possibilities of modern music but also encourages other musicians to experiment with emerging technologies.

GENGVEJ has hinted that That’s All I Need marks the final chapter for “Girls for Everything” before he transitions into working with live musicians, singers, and producers. His upcoming plans include an album compiling all tracks, remixes, and bonus material from the project, set for release in the summer of 2025. From there, he’ll embark on a new phase of his musical career—one that moves away from AI-driven compositions and into collaborations with “real” people. However, as he playfully suggests, “never say never.” Given his ever-evolving artistic nature, it wouldn’t be surprising if AI and traditional musicianship continue to intertwine in his future projects.

That’s All I Need is more than just an EP—it’s a statement of artistic growth, technological exploration, and personal dedication. GENGVEJ’s ability to balance AI-generated creativity with human refinement results in a sound that is both futuristic and deeply rooted in musical tradition. His embrace of experimentation, coupled with a willingness to face challenges head-on, makes this release a compelling addition to today’s music landscape.

Whether you’re drawn to its disco-infused grooves, intrigued by its unconventional production process, or simply looking for something fresh and boundary-pushing, That’s All I Need offers plenty to explore. It’s a project that proves music is always evolving, and so is GENGVEJ.
