Lucy Crisp shines with her latest release, “Locked Down,” a track brimming with infectious pop optimism, a tapestry of harmonies, and vivid synths that ignite an empowering spirit in listeners, regardless of life’s challenges. This single serves as a poignant testament to Lucy’s personal journey through and beyond the COVID-19 lockdown, shedding light on her experiences as someone living with a disability. Following in the footsteps of her previous track, “One Summer’s Day,” which earned the esteemed title of “Track of the Week” from BBC Introducing East Midlands in April 2023, “Locked Down” marks the second offering from her highly anticipated debut EP, “65 Roses,” scheduled for release on November 3, 2023.
Lucy Crisp’s musical journey is a profound testament to her resilience in the face of adversity. Hailing from Nottingham, this pop singer-songwriter candidly shares her inspiration for “Locked Down,” stating, “‘Locked Down’ is an honest reflection of the mix of anger and hope I experienced as someone who had to shield during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was an unprecedented time, and each of us had our lives disrupted in various ways. I’ve always been the type to put on a brave face and deal with life’s challenges head-on. However, finding coping mechanisms while confined within the same four walls for months presented a colossal challenge. Even when restrictions eased for others, I remained housebound, and that was the most trying part—watching everyone else seemingly enjoying life, while I felt trapped at home. I longed for the freedom that young people in their twenties typically enjoy, yet my disability posed insurmountable barriers.”
Despite the overwhelming gloom that surrounded her, Lucy’s indomitable spirit found solace in music, providing her with a sanctuary amid life’s stark realities. Her reflections on the past year culminated in the creation of the pandemic anthem, “Locked Down.” “I’ve always aspired to craft a modern synth-pop song infused with a sense of nostalgia, inviting my fans to dance, release pent-up frustrations, or perhaps do both simultaneously. Above all, I want my fans to immerse themselves in the upbeat rhythms and find the freedom to express their emotions in whichever way resonates with them.”
Drawing inspiration from the timeless synth-pop classics of the 1980s, Lucy’s music instantly transports listeners to that era, creating a sonic realm that captures the essence of a bygone time. Lucy also credits the TV series “Stranger Things” as a significant influence on her sound. “I strongly connected with the character Max during that season, as her experiences mirrored my own during the lockdown. When she broke free from Vecna’s grasp, she found her freedom, and I aimed to infuse that sense of liberation into my song.”
Lucy’s debut EP, “65 Roses,” provides an intimate glimpse into her personal journey, marked by her courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis—a genetic condition affecting 10,000 individuals in the UK. In a poignant message shared on her social media, Lucy explains, ” ’65 Roses’ has always been another way to remember Cystic Fibrosis. This project serves as an introduction to me and a sincere reflection of the physical and mental challenges I confront. My hope is that these songs provide comfort to those who listen, inspiring them to embrace their vulnerability and openly express their feelings, disabilities notwithstanding.”
With “Locked Down,” Lucy Crisp seamlessly merges musical prowess with unyielding determination, presenting an empowering anthem that resonates universally. As she prepares to release her debut EP, “65 Roses,” Lucy warmly invites you to join her on this musical journey—a journey characterized by hope, resilience, and the jubilant celebration of the human spirit.
