Embark on a musical journey with The Alpines as they present their latest album, “Heading North” – a folky rock anthem that weaves a tale of adventure, loss, and discovery in a post-apocalyptic world. Comprising Bri McCall (singer and rhythm guitar), Danny Patino (lead guitar), Jake Trotta (bass), and Levi Johnson (drums), The Alpines have crafted an album filled with ear candy, incorporating French dub, synthy shoegaze, and powerful vocals, promising a captivating experience for listeners.
Formed in the fall of 2021, The Alpines originated from the collaboration between Bri McCall and Danny Patino. Their chance meeting over coffee led to weekly studio sessions, resulting in the creation of the post-apocalyptic concept album, “Heading North.” The addition of a bass player and drummer completed the lineup, and the band played its first full gig in October 2022 at Kilby Court in Salt Lake City.
Influenced by artists such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, and The Lumineers, The Alpines bring a diverse range of inspirations to their music. The band has showcased their talent at notable events like Utah Arts Festival, Grid City Fest, Craft Lake City DIY Fest, and more, including a two-week Pacific Northwest tour in the summer of 2023.
An interesting twist in their journey involves a recommendation from a friend of The Plastic Cherries during a performance at the Utah Arts Festival, leading to an invitation to play at The Velour – a significant honor for The Alpines.
The production of “Heading North” took place at Rocket Skates Studio, involving the collaborative efforts of Danny Patino, Bri McCall, Levi Johnson, Jake Trotta, and Nate Brown. The album captures a unique ethos, inspired by Bri’s 400-mile hike across the Pacific Northwest Trail in preparation for her solo journey through grizzly bear country, snow, water, and mud.
Standout tracks on the album include “Everything has Changed,” “The Takeaway,” and the titular “Heading North,” each contributing to the narrative of the post-apocalyptic adventure. Blending influences of Americana, psychedelic, dance, folk, synth, and indie, the title track serves as the rock anthem encapsulating the story of four weary travelers finding a new home in a desolate world.
Amidst the recording process, an amusing tidbit emerged – Danny Patino learned how to solve a Rubik’s Cube during downtime at Rocket Skate Studio, adding a touch of lightheartedness to the album’s creation.
Bri McCall reflects on the band’s journey, stating, “Heading North is just the beginning of this crazy ride ahead for The Alpines. I know in my bones we have a lot of room to grow.” Jake Trotta, the bassist, also expressed his admiration for the band’s music during his audition, saying, “I have been listening to your demos on repeat. I feel like I am meeting celebrities right now; I love your music.”
With “Heading North,” The Alpines invite listeners to join them on a sonic expedition, offering a unique and captivating musical experience that promises just the beginning of their promising journey in the music landscape.
