“Black Coal Lung” paints a stark picture of life in a small town in Ohio, where the presence of a coal power plant casts a dark shadow over the community. The lyrics vividly describe the daily struggles faced by residents, who endure the relentless onslaught of fine particulates emitted from the plant’s stacks. These toxic emissions permeate the air, leading to a surge in respiratory illnesses such as COPD, Asthma, Cancer, and other debilitating lung diseases.

The song delves into the heart-wrenching reality of families torn apart by the necessity of long commutes to work in hazardous conditions, leaving loved ones behind in a landscape marred by ash and grey. The coal dust hangs heavy in the air, making every breath a laborious task.

Through haunting melodies and poignant lyrics, “Black Coal Lung” captures the desperation of a community trapped in a cycle of environmental degradation and economic hardship. It serves as a rallying cry for environmental justice, shedding light on the human cost of industrial pollution and the urgent need for systemic change to protect the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.

“Through ‘Black Coal Lung,’ we aim to shine a spotlight on the harsh realities faced by communities living in the shadow of coal power plants.
