The all-girl teenage rock band Baby Said has taken the music world by storm with their debut EP ‘Who Gives A Rock.’ Formed by UK-based Italian/Punjabi sisters Veronica (19) and Jess Pal (17), this Portsmouth-based group recently expanded their lineup by adding Holly Knowles on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, and Maddie Hackett on drums. With their infectious energy, raw sound, and compelling lyrics, Baby Said is quickly establishing themselves as a significant force in the rock genre.
Baby Said’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their demos were compelling enough for Måneskin’s agent, Lucia Wade at ITB, to sign them without seeing a live performance, a testament to their talent and potential. This early endorsement has proven prescient, as the band’s releases have consistently topped major playlists on Apple Music, including ‘The New Rock,’ ‘New In Rock,’ and ‘New In Alt.’ Their success is further underscored by their support of US rockers Dirty Honey on a sold-out UK tour and their performances at prestigious festivals such as The Great Escape, Reading and Leeds, Victorious, and Live At Leeds.
Baby Said’s debut singles, “FIGHT” and “YOU KILLED IT,” produced by Gethin Pearson (known for his work with Bloc Party and Badly Drawn Boy), garnered significant attention and support from Apple Music’s editorial team. “FIGHT” is a powerful anthem born from the band’s experiences with skepticism and prejudice during their early gigs. It captures their defiant spirit and determination to prove themselves, with lyrics like “we’re just gonna roll our eyes” and “we don’t run from a fight.”
“You Killed It,” on the other hand, emerged from a unique creative process. During a writing session in Wales, Pearson encouraged Veronica and Jess to write down anything that came to mind. Despite initial nerves, the sisters quickly found their rhythm, crafting lyrics that reflect their raw and authentic songwriting style. The EP’s third track, “MOUTH SHUT,” produced by Scottish producer Lewis Gardiner, humorously tackles the theme of attractive people losing their appeal once they start talking. It’s a catchy, relatable song that showcases the band’s wit and insight.
The closing track, “PANIC ATTACK,” also produced by Gardiner, delves into the challenging subject of anxiety. Described by Jess Pal, the song starts with low energy to depict the exhaustion of anxiety before building up to an intense climax, mirroring the experience of a panic attack. This track highlights the band’s ability to address serious issues with sensitivity and depth, adding an emotional layer to their music.
Baby Said’s impressive rise has not gone unnoticed. They have received extensive radio support from platforms such as BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Radio X, Amazing Radio, XS Manchester, and various student network radios. The band was also named ‘Ones To Watch’ by the much-respected ROTD and ‘Artists Of The Week’ by the globally syndicated A&R Worldwide. Critics like Thomas H Green of The Arts Desk and The Telegraph have praised the band, noting their tight performances and catchy, impactful songs. Green draws a loose comparison to Wet Leg, emphasizing Baby Said’s distinct US rock influence.
As Baby Said prepares to release their debut album in September, they continue to write and record with some of the UK’s top rock teams, whose members have worked with artists such as McFly, Twin Atlantic, Ocean Colour Scene, Stereophonics, 5 Seconds of Summer, Black Honey, and Charlatans. Their summer schedule is packed with festival appearances, ensuring that their dynamic performances reach an ever-growing audience.
With ‘Who Gives A Rock,’ Baby Said has not only announced their arrival but has firmly established themselves as a band to watch in the rock music scene. Their combination of raw energy, powerful lyrics, and unwavering determination positions them for continued success. As they gear up for the release of their debut album and a summer filled with performances, Baby Said stands ready to captivate the global soundscape and inspire fans with their music and message.
