Brenna Menz – Shattered Perspectives

Shattered Perspectives feels like an album built around one uncomfortable truth: the way we understand a relationship can change as we change ourselves.

Brenna Menz turns the story of a complicated, more than two-year on-and-off relationship into a pop album that follows those changing emotions and perspectives. Rather than presenting the experience from one fixed point of view, the album moves through different stages of understanding, frustration, honesty, and self-reflection. Even the music mirrors that movement, shifting between electronic pop, folk, reggae influences, and other sounds while keeping pop at its core.

That variety is one of the album’s defining features. Each song has room to develop its own identity, reflecting how differently the same relationship can feel at different points in time. The result is not a perfectly straight emotional journey. It is messy, uncertain, and sometimes contradictory, which is exactly what makes the concept relatable.

The focus track, “I Hope You Miss Me,” represents one of the album’s most emotionally direct moments. Menz describes it as the pettiest but most honest song she has written, capturing the feelings that came after the relationship ended. There is something compelling about that honesty. Instead of trying to make the aftermath sound graceful or perfectly resolved, the song allows room for the less flattering emotions that can come with heartbreak.

That honesty becomes even more interesting when placed beside “Break This Habit.” While “I Hope You Miss Me” looks outward at the other person, “Break This Habit” turns the attention inward. Menz acknowledges her own flaws and questions how a relationship can work if the same patterns keep repeating. Together, the songs show two very different ways of processing the same kind of emotional experience.

The album was written entirely by Menz from her own experiences, while two producers helped bring those ideas into finished recordings. Some songs began with nothing more than a melody and a few words, while others started with lyrics that needed a musical direction. That process seems fitting for an album concerned with perspectives that are constantly changing.

There is also something fitting about Shattered Perspectives being Menz’s debut album. It does not pretend that she has everything figured out. Instead, it documents the process of figuring things out—the mistakes, the attachment, the frustration, the self-questioning, and eventually the willingness to keep moving.

The closing track, “Cliff,” carries that idea into the final stretch of the album. Built around the idea that you never know what will happen unless you take the chance, it leaves the project looking beyond the relationship itself and toward the uncertainty of becoming an artist and moving forward.

Shattered Perspectives is ultimately a portrait of emotional growth that does not try to make growth look neat. Brenna Menz gives herself permission to be angry, vulnerable, self-critical, hopeful, and unsure. That willingness to show the contradictions makes the album feel personal without losing its ability to connect with anyone who has struggled to let go of something that was no longer working.
