Cruel Ploy Turns Fear Into a Story of Growth on New EP Fear

Fear can be one of the most complicated emotions to write about because it rarely exists on its own. It can influence relationships, identity, confidence, regret, and the way we imagine our future. On their new five-song EP Fear, Cruel Ploy takes that complexity head-on, creating a project that feels personal without becoming overly self-indulgent.

Released independently through Parallel Static Records, Fear is an emotionally focused alternative rock release that explores the uncomfortable thoughts people often keep to themselves. What I find most interesting is that the band doesn’t treat fear simply as being scared. Instead, the EP examines how anxiety can begin shaping the stories we tell ourselves before anything has even happened. 

The project unfolds as a connected narrative through five tracks: Fear, Faultless, The Disguise, Last Time, and Learning Curve. The opening track acts as the emotional centre, confronting uncertainty and the tendency to expect the worst. From there, the EP moves into perfectionism, hidden identities, endings, and finally the difficult lessons that come with personal growth. Each song approaches the central idea from a different perspective, making the release feel like a complete journey rather than five unrelated singles. 

Musically, Cruel Ploy finds a strong balance between vulnerability and intensity. Atmospheric guitars, energetic rhythms, emotionally charged vocals, and melodic hooks bring together alternative rock, indie rock, emo, and modern rock influences. I particularly appreciate the decision not to make the production feel overly perfect. The EP deliberately leaves room for imperfections, allowing the performances to breathe. That choice fits the project’s message beautifully because Fear is ultimately about accepting the parts of ourselves that we often try to hide. 

The songwriting is where the EP really connects. Cruel Ploy doesn’t offer a convenient solution to anxiety or suggest that personal growth happens overnight. Instead, the band recognises that confidence and doubt can exist at the same time, and that healing is rarely a straight line. That honesty makes the songs easier to relate to because they don’t pretend that becoming stronger means becoming completely fearless.

What I appreciate most about Fear is its willingness to confront uncomfortable truths without losing its sense of melody. Cruel Ploy understands that emotionally heavy songwriting doesn’t have to be inaccessible. The memorable hooks and guitar-driven arrangements give the EP enough energy to remain engaging while the lyrics provide the depth that rewards closer listening.
