Digging for Kanky – “Raining Stones”

Life can sometimes feel like an endless effort to keep going, particularly when everyday pressures seem to arrive without giving you much room to breathe. Manchester trio Digging for Kanky explore that experience on “Raining Stones”, a dark, atmospheric alternative track that reflects on hardship, survival and the quiet resilience required to navigate working-class life.

Released on October 30, 2026, the single takes its name and inspiration from Ken Loach’s 1993 film Raining Stones, drawing on the filmmaker’s tradition of unsentimental social realism. Rather than offering easy answers or turning struggle into an overly optimistic story, the band remain focused on the weight of ordinary experiences and the people who carry them. There is a fragile beauty in that approach, finding humanity in circumstances that are often difficult and unforgiving.

Musically, “Raining Stones” moves through future garage textures, alternative hip-hop influences and downtempo electronics. Its brooding atmosphere and haunting lyrical direction create a cinematic listening experience, balancing the darker elements of its subject matter with an immersive sonic identity. The track occupies an interesting space between underground hip-hop and atmospheric alternative music, with echoes of artists such as Massive Attack, The Streets and Leftfield.

The song’s emotional foundation is rooted in the realities of everyday life. It reflects on what people often carry silently, the pressures that gradually wear them down and the determination needed to keep moving forward. There is no attempt to romanticise hardship. Instead, Digging for Kanky approach their subject with a grounded perspective that acknowledges the difficulty of survival while holding on to dignity and resilience.

The accompanying visual campaign extends this idea into another creative direction. Produced by Hyde Productions, the music video reimagines classic works of art within a council estate setting. By bringing familiar artistic imagery into an everyday environment, the concept creates a contrast between fine art and lived experience, reinforcing the single’s themes of hardship, dignity and survival. The video is scheduled to follow the single’s release.

Digging for Kanky are a Manchester-based trio whose work combines alternative music, trip-hop and downtempo influences with dark, cinematic storytelling. Comprised of Ben Powell, Adam Smith and Kat Brown, the group draws inspiration from a range of atmospheric and alternative artists, developing a sound that reflects both their musical interests and their connection to the realities of working-class Britain.

“Raining Stones” is also the title track from the band’s forthcoming album, scheduled for release on November 20, 2026. As an introduction to the wider project, the single establishes a distinctly melancholic atmosphere and a clear sense of place.

With “Raining Stones”, Digging for Kanky offer a thoughtful reflection on the struggles that often go unseen. It is a release that finds its strength in atmosphere, honest storytelling and an understanding that sometimes survival itself is an achievement.
