Ellijai’s “Skinny Boyfriend” is the kind of song that knows exactly what it wants to be. Released on August 21, 2026, the Glasgow artist’s latest single is playful, flirtatious and packed with enough attitude to make it difficult to sit still.

What I like most about the track is how confidently it embraces its personality. Built around punchy guitars, driving synths, powerful vocals and a huge chant-along chorus, “Skinny Boyfriend” turns attraction into something loud, chaotic and addictive. The song is about being completely fascinated by someone who appears laid-back and innocent but somehow carries effortless rock-star energy. That contradiction gives the track much of its charm.
There is a cheeky quality to the songwriting that keeps the song from taking itself too seriously. Ellijai captures that slightly ridiculous feeling of being completely obsessed with someone, where even their messy habits and strange little quirks somehow become attractive. It feels fun rather than manufactured, and that makes the central idea easy to connect with.
Musically, the combination of synths and guitar is particularly effective. There is enough electronic energy to give the track a modern edge, while the guitars keep it firmly connected to indie rock. I can hear why fans of artists such as Wolf Alice, Paramore and Yeah Yeah Yeahs would find something to enjoy here, but Ellijai is clearly developing a personality of her own within that space.
Her vocals are another major strength. There is a confidence to the performance that suits the song perfectly, especially when the track opens up into its bigger moments. The result feels like music made to be played loudly, preferably with a crowd shouting the chorus back.
At only 18, Ellijai has already built an impressive foundation. She has received support from BBC Introducing Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland, Amazing Radio and BFBS, while her live performances across Scotland have included King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, The Garage, SWG3 and several festivals. “Skinny Boyfriend” is her fourth release of 2026 and continues a run of new music leading toward her planned debut album in summer 2027.
What stands out to me is that the song does not feel like an artist trying to prove how serious she is. Instead, Ellijai sounds comfortable having fun with her music while still delivering strong songwriting and production.
For me, “Skinny Boyfriend” is a bright, energetic step forward. It is flirtatious, guitar-heavy and unapologetically catchy, with exactly the kind of attitude that makes indie rock exciting.
