Erick Oscar – “Show What I Feel”

Some love is inherited. Some love is learned. And sometimes, the most meaningful thing a person can do is decide that the patterns they grew up with will not be the patterns they pass on.

That idea sits at the heart of Erick Oscar’s “Show What I Feel,” a deeply personal song written for his wife. As an adult, Oscar came to understand that his parents rarely said “I love you” because they had never heard those words themselves growing up. Rather than allowing that silence to continue into another generation, he chose to break the cycle—telling his wife and children that he loves them and making affection something that should be openly expressed.

The message is beautifully simple: love must be heard and felt.

There is something especially powerful about turning that realisation into a song. Oscar isn’t writing about an abstract idea of romance; he is writing about a conscious decision to communicate love while there is still time to say it. “Show What I Feel” becomes an expression of both devotion and change, transforming a personal family history into something hopeful.

Music has been part of Oscar’s life for decades. His father was a singer who introduced him to love songs and ballads during childhood, and Oscar has now spent more than 35 years playing acoustic guitar with his church worship band. During that time, he has written more than 1,200 songs.

That history gives his songwriting a sense of continuity. The love songs he heard as a child became part of the musical language through which he eventually learned to express his own emotions.

Oscar’s creative process has also evolved. More recently, he taught himself how to work with music-production software, learning to shape styles, tempos, vocals, instrumentation and arrangements. That has allowed him to produce several albums himself. He describes himself as an amateur producer, but there is something endearing about the way he approaches production—not as a quest for technical perfection, but as another way of bringing songs he has already imagined to life.

And that seems to be the larger purpose behind his music. Oscar believes music can touch the soul in a way that few other things can, and his songwriting is driven by a desire to touch hearts and inspire people.

“Show What I Feel” does that through one of the most universal emotions there is: love. But its real strength comes from the reason behind the song. Oscar isn’t simply saying that he loves his wife. He is choosing to make sure she knows it, while creating a new emotional language for the family that comes after him.

Sometimes breaking a generational cycle doesn’t require a dramatic gesture. Sometimes it begins with saying the words you were never taught to say. And then saying them again, until love becomes something everyone knows how to hear.
