Kevin Keller – ALTUS

After more than three decades of composing, what happens when an artist stops searching for something new and begins recognising something that has been present all along? For composer and recording artist Kevin Keller, that question lies at the heart of ALTUS, his 16th album and a deeply contemplative work that brings together familiar musical elements and unexpected discoveries. Rather than expanding his creative world simply for the sake of exploration, Keller seems to be looking for connections between the sounds, questions and experiences that have shaped his journey.

Released on October 30, 2026, ALTUS unfolds across ten interconnected pieces, inviting listeners into an inward journey through longing, wonder, memory, silence and a sense of homecoming. There are no lyrics or prescribed beliefs guiding the experience. Instead, the music creates space for personal interpretation, allowing each listener to bring their own questions and experiences to the album.

That openness is central to its appeal. ALTUS does not attempt to explain life’s mysteries or resolve the questions surrounding mortality, beauty and transcendence. Its approach is more intuitive, moving gradually from individual reflection towards a feeling of connection with something larger. The result is an album that can be experienced as a meditation, a search for belonging or simply an opportunity to step away from everyday distractions.

Musically, Keller draws on a palette that spans solo piano, organ, celesta and analogue synthesizers, including Moog and Juno instruments. The distinctive Solar 42 synthesizer became an unexpected catalyst during the writing process, introducing a new dimension to a sound world Keller has spent decades developing. Rather than beginning with a rigid concept, the album emerged through improvisation, with ideas taking shape organically as the instruments entered into conversation.

This combination of acoustic warmth and luminous electronic textures gives ALTUS its distinctive character. Familiar elements of Keller’s musical language remain present, but they sit alongside sounds he had not previously explored in quite the same way. The music balances intimacy with expansiveness, creating an atmosphere that feels personal without becoming narrowly autobiographical.

An especially striking chapter in the album’s story came after its completion, when Keller travelled to Namibia. Listening to the finished work amid the vast desert landscape around Sossusvlei, he experienced the music differently. Its spaciousness seemed suddenly at home in the surrounding environment, as though the landscape had revealed a dimension of the album that had been waiting to be discovered. The experience echoes the record’s central idea: sometimes, understanding arrives not through creating something entirely new, but through seeing something familiar from another perspective.

Based in New York City, Keller has spent more than 30 years developing his distinctive approach to ambient chamber music, blending intimate piano performances with live instrumentation and expansive sonic environments. His catalogue includes Evensong, The Front Porch of Heaven, Ice Worlds, La Strada and Arcadia, the latter exploring medieval-inspired plainchant alongside contemporary electronics and live strings.

With ALTUS, Keller brings that experience into a work that feels less like a conclusion than a moment of recognition. Patient, immersive and open to interpretation, it invites listeners to slow down and consider questions that rarely yield simple answers. Its greatest achievement may be the space it leaves for each person to find something different within the same music.
