Healing rarely happens in a straight line. Sometimes, the clarity that comes with leaving a difficult chapter behind arrives years after the events themselves, when the people, relationships and choices that once seemed right begin to look different. On Smoke & Mirrors, Nashville-born singer-songwriter Mi’Kael Chalyce explores that complicated space between illusion and truth, creating a four-track EP that embraces the discomfort of personal growth without pretending to have everything figured out.

Released on October 9, 2026, Smoke & Mirrors occupies an important position in Chalyce’s artistic journey. Following her previous release, First Flame, and leading toward the forthcoming The Reinvention, the EP serves as a middle chapter in a larger story of self-discovery. It is not a declaration that transformation is complete, but a reflection on what happens when someone begins to understand their experiences differently.
The project brings together songs written at different stages of Chalyce’s life. Half originated during collaborative songwriting sessions with other writers between 2019 and 2021, while the remaining tracks emerged after she had endured profound personal hardship. Hearing these different periods come together gives the EP a compelling emotional context: some songs were written by the woman experiencing particular circumstances, while others reflect the perspective of the person she became afterward.
That contrast is particularly evident in “Not the Same,” which explores how heartbreak and broken trust can fundamentally change a person. Its central idea is not simply that a relationship has ended, but that the person looking back at it has changed too. “Glitter Ain’t Gold” approaches a related realisation from another angle, examining the moment when something that once seemed desirable reveals itself to be unhealthy. Together, the songs capture the difficult process of learning to distinguish temporary satisfaction from what genuinely serves you.
Chalyce allows these themes to coexist with desire, sensuality and movement rather than reducing the project to a single emotional register. Influenced by the thoughtful vulnerability of Sade, India.Arie and Solange Knowles, alongside the conversational songwriting of Muni Long, her approach favours personal storytelling over easy conclusions. The songs acknowledge that someone can be healing while still experiencing conflicting emotions, and that growth does not require denying the parts of life that remain complicated.
The recording process reinforces that intimacy. Every track was created in a home-studio environment, giving Chalyce the freedom to experiment without the pressure of a commercial studio schedule. “Motions” is especially significant because she recorded and engineered it entirely independently for the first time. The achievement represents more than a technical milestone; it reflects an artist becoming increasingly confident in her ability to shape her own work from the initial idea through to the finished recording.
Beyond music, Chalyce is an actress, educator and entrepreneur, as well as the founder of Shea Butta Shawty, a soul-care brand centred on reflection and intentional living. These different creative pursuits share the same emphasis on authenticity that defines her songwriting.
Smoke & Mirrors is ultimately about learning to see clearly without pretending that clarity erases the past. Mi’Kael Chalyce does not offer a perfectly packaged story of survival or an uncomplicated account of becoming stronger. Instead, she invites listeners into the middle of the process, where old feelings meet new understanding and the future remains unwritten. Its honesty lies in recognising that sometimes the most meaningful transformation begins simply with seeing things as they are.
