DOUBLE TRIANGLE Unveils Dual Sonic Gems: “Haberdashery” and “Brenda”

In a unique tribute to familial influences and childhood creativity, DOUBLE TRIANGLE, the British music producer and motion designer, has released a distinctive double feature: “Haberdashery” and “Brenda.” The dual tracks, both released on the same day, offer a musical journey spanning the artist’s childhood to present, merging the creative energies of child and adult selves.

“Haberdashery,” the A-side of this musical endeavor, is a special dedication to DOUBLE TRIANGLE’s Nan, and its release date holds a poignant significance – aligning with her birthday. The artist fondly recalls owing much of their musical journey to this inspirational figure who not only encouraged them but even baked an “Erasure cake” for their 11th birthday. The inception of the song dates back to when DOUBLE TRIANGLE was a mere nine years old, sketching out melodies at their Grandma’s house.

The composition process reflects a collaboration between the child and adult versions of DOUBLE TRIANGLE. Crafted primarily as a piano piece, the chords and melodies were meticulously laid out in a raw, natural form before any electronic interventions. The artist notes the lengthy process of finalizing the ending sequence, emphasizing the importance of a musical resolution. Drawing inspiration from French electronica of the ’70s and ’80s, including iconic names like Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis, as well as more contemporary influences such as Röyksopp, Todd Terje, and Lindstrom, “Haberdashery” stands as a partner to the artist’s previous single, “Peony Blossom,” sharing a similar aesthetic and era-specific influences.

The B-side of this dual release, “Brenda,” further enriches the narrative, providing an intriguing contrast with its neo-classical synthwave fusion. Written in two distinct phases of DOUBLE TRIANGLE’s life, the A-section was composed at the tender age of nine under the encouragement of their late Nan, Brenda. This section retains the melodies and essence of the original childhood creation.

The B-section, penned recently, adds a new dimension to the piece, embodying a serendipitous moment where chords effortlessly flowed onto the piano. This part of the composition exudes a neo-classical aura with a synthwave twist, creating a unique sonic landscape reminiscent of artists like Nils Frahm and Tomita. Collaborating with singer and composer Madil Hardis, DOUBLE TRIANGLE blends the old and new seamlessly, creating a piece that transcends temporal boundaries.

The artist, born in 1991, embarked on their musical journey early, starting piano at the age of 8. Despite early dismissal by a piano teacher for their inclination toward dark chords and a preference for contemporary chart music, DOUBLE TRIANGLE’s passion for music only intensified. They acquired their first instruments—a 4-track, drum machine, and synth—around the age of 9, setting the stage for a lifelong exploration of sound.

An alumnus of the University where Alison Goldfrapp also studied, DOUBLE TRIANGLE’s professional life unfolded in the design realm, including stints at the BBC and contributions to the UK’s NHS Covid response design. Balancing a dynamic career in motion design, they have also devoted themselves to music production, drawing inspiration from diverse influences, including family, experiences, and a fascination with space exploration.

DOUBLE TRIANGLE, a moniker inspired by a spaceship from the film “Les maîtres du temps,” has crafted a distinctive name and aesthetic, resonating with the emotional and melancholic synth-heavy soundtrack that continues to inspire the artist. The recent release of “Haberdashery” and “Brenda” signifies a remarkable fusion of past and present, an ode to personal history and the timeless allure of innovative sonic exploration. As DOUBLE TRIANGLE continues to evolve, their journey through music promises to be as eclectic and captivating as the notes that compose their unique sound.

With ‘Haberdashery’ and ‘Brenda,’ Double Triangle invites listeners on a nostalgic journey, capturing the essence of childhood creativity, emotional depth, and a dedication to crafting music that transcends time.
