Midwave Breaks Rock the Scene with ‘Stonewall’: A Fusion of Nostalgic and Contemporary Rock Vibes”

Since their inception in 2021, Midwave Breaks, the spirited duo from New Zealand, have been a powerful force in music. Their track record boasts successful singles, with several hitting the Top 10 NZ Rock Airplay Chart and others reaching the Top 20. Their earlier release in 2023, “Souvenirs,” had a dominant presence on Rock radio across New Zealand for months.

Their latest creation, “Stonewall,” is a vibrant, high-energy track, a punchy banger under three minutes that bursts onto the scene with a blend of retrospective dirty rock ‘n’ roll and a fresh, modern rock vibe. Drawing from influences of ’80s and ’90s alternative rock/pop legends like Springsteen, Petty, Cornell, and Vedder, Midwave Breaks weaves a rich tapestry of musical influences from the past and present.

Midwave Breaks beautifully harmonize the nostalgic essence of yesteryears’ music with a contemporary touch. Hailing from Tauranga, this alt-rock duo is poised to once again captivate the rock airwaves with “Stonewall,” mirroring the energy that propelled their previous hit, “Souvenirs,” resonating deeply with their expanding fanbase across Aotearoa.

The artistic collaboration between Bruce Conlon, the singer-songwriter and guitarist, and the renowned drummer Paul Russell, formerly of Supergroove and Che Fu, and a part of the NZ Music Hall of Fame, has sparked a wave of inspired creativity. Crafting new material in the studio, they’re thrilled to present “Stonewall” as a glimpse into their upcoming musical journey.

Drummer Paul Russell shares an unusual genesis for “Stonewall”: “So Bruce accidentally punctured his pop-up pool with the lawnmower, creating a hole and necessitating its removal. It’s something he’d been putting off, and as he headed out to dismantle it, the phrase ‘I don’t wanna do it but I gotta do it’ kept echoing in his head, becoming the foundation and the opening line of the track.”

“Stonewall” marks an exciting chapter in Midwave Breaks’ musical evolution, merging the robust, raw energy of rock’s past with a contemporary edge, propelling the duo into a new phase of creativity and sonic exploration.
