Gaby K Releases Genre-Bending Single “Not Right”

Gaby K, the Birmingham-born, London-based R&B singer-songwriter, has returned with her latest single, “Not Right,” a track that marks a daring departure from her previous work. This new release, available on all major streaming platforms from July 5, 2024, sees Gaby K venturing into the jungle genre, an unexpected but fitting choice given the song’s themes.

“Not Right” stands out in Gaby K’s discography, diverging from her usual soulful R&B melodies infused with a pop edge. Influenced by the likes of Nia Archives, the track embraces the energetic and rhythmic elements of jungle music, a genre known for its breakbeats and fast tempos. This shift in style reflects the tumultuous period in Gaby K’s life that inspired the song.

Gaby K explained, “I wrote this track when I was going through a bit of a dark time. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life and, coming to the end of my 20s, I spiraled a little, with the pressure of how I should know where my life is going. I basically talk about exactly what I was doing in those few months of partying, losing my mind, and just panicking about nearly turning 30. I wanted it to be a jungle track because that’s what I was listening to at the time and felt it fit for the lyrics. Now I listen to it, it makes me smile.

“Not Right” delves into the anxiety and confusion many face as they approach milestone birthdays, particularly the pressure to have life figured out by the end of one’s 20s. Gaby K captures the essence of this panic and the escapism found in nightlife and partying. The song is a candid narrative about falling out of love and grappling with life’s uncertainties.

Despite its heavy subject matter, “Not Right” also carries an uplifting message. Gaby K reflects on the importance of enjoying one’s 20s, recognizing that this decade is often viewed as a time for serious decision-making but should also be about having fun and embracing the journey.

Following the success of her EP “Get To Love You,” which received high praise from platforms such as Earmilk, Spindle, Wordplay Magazine, and Ones To Watch, Gaby K continues to evolve as an artist. “Not Right” showcases her versatility and willingness to explore new musical landscapes. This latest single is a testament to her natural gift as a songwriter and storyteller, attributes that have earned her significant acclaim and support.

Gaby K’s music has consistently promoted self-love and female empowerment, themes that resonate through her emotionally raw and organically driven songs. Her honest and heartfelt songwriting has drawn comparisons to artists like Emeli Sandé and Joy Crookes, while her vocal style and delivery evoke the spirit of Amy Winehouse, Jessie Reyez, and Amber Mark.

Since deciding to pursue music professionally in 2016, Gaby K has made significant strides in the UK music scene. Her talent has not gone unnoticed, earning her coveted spots as the main support act for Olivia Dean’s 2021 EP tour and Pip Millett’s 2022 UK tour. Her work has garnered impressive support from BBC Introducing across Birmingham and London, further solidifying her presence in the industry.

Gaby K’s commitment to her craft and her ability to convey powerful emotions through her music continues to win her fans and critical acclaim. As she moves into 2024, she is poised to take her musical career even further, with new projects in the pipeline that promise to build on her already impressive body of work.

“Not Right” is more than just a new single; it represents a bold step in Gaby K’s artistic journey. By blending her soulful R&B roots with the dynamic energy of jungle music, she offers listeners a fresh and exciting experience. This track not only highlights her versatility but also her willingness to take risks and explore new genres.
